Nikolas Sarlo knows men are underrepresented in the nursing field. But he’s hoping more will consider the profession, just like he has.

“I tell people, ‘This is a great job and you’re doing a lot of good,’” he says. “By making it more acceptable in men’s minds, I think we’ll see a lot of the insecurity going away.”

This year, Nik returned to his all-boys Catholic high school to talk to members of the Pre-Health Club about his experiences studying nursing at Dominican.

“I was happy to help some kids become more certain about whether they want to be a nurse,” Nik recalls. “It’s a difficult major—I’m not going to lie. But I told them it’s important to have someone who can be there for them through thick and thin, someone to keep them grounded and encouraged.”

Nik hopes to pursue an advanced degree and work as a nurse anesthetist, administering anesthesia to patients undergoing surgery or other medical procedures.
